It’s time to hold police accountable.

It’s time to Pass the Community POWER Act.

THE PROBLEM:

POLICE ABUSE THEIR POWER AND GET AWAY WITH IT.

NYPD officers unfairly target black, brown and poor communities, conduct illegal searches, attack activists, lie in testimony and attack and kill New York City residents with no consequence.

THE CURRENT REVIEW BOARD IS APPOINTED AND POWERLESS.

A majority of current board members are appointed by the Mayor and the NYPD, and it can only make reccomendations to the police commissioner, who then waters them down or throws them out 75% of the time.

THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS ARE TOO CLOSE TO THE POLICE.

District Attorney’s work too closely with the police officers to prosecute them without bias when they break the law.

WE NEED A BOARD THAT IS:

ELECTED AND ACCOUNTABLE TO THE COMMUNITY

Representing every neighborhood, including those most affected by police violence and misconduct.

EMPOWERED AND EFFECTIVE.

Able to make full investigations and enact binding discipline decisions on guilty officers that the Police Commissioner is required to carry out.

PARTNERED WITH AN INDEPENDENT PROSECUTOR.

Elected by the people and responsible for all criminal cases involving the NYPD to ensure unbiased prosecution. Able to win justice in past cases where families have lost loved ones.

THE CITY COUNCIL CAN PASS THE COMMUNITY POWER ACT TODAY.

But not without pressure from the public.
